Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends
Economic
1: Climate change is causing more natural disasters.
A: I heard about this trend on the Wall Street Journal researching economic trends in the United States.
B: Providing proof of actions we as humans take that harm our environment would potentially cause people to change their behavior. An opportunity exists for us to better ourselves for the sake of the world we live on. There are currently some actions taking place, like electric cars, but I believe we can do more.
C: Humans not only in the country, but also worldwide would be the prototypical customer.
D: This opportunity is difficult to exploit because we as humans want to accomplish our daily tasks as quickly and conveniently as possible, which often leads to damaging our world. We are very lazy as a society, and it is hard for people to sacrifice the ease of their lives for a healthier world, even if it leads to natural disasters.
E: I saw this opportunity because, walking around Israel, I noticed the abundance of cigarette smokers overseas. Even though Americans are aware of the current climate change crisis, cigarettes are not nearly as popular here as they are internationally, so many people here have not experienced walking down a street with the scent of cigarettes all around. Cigarettes are one example of how we affect the climate, which causes natural disasters.
2: The advancement of technology is moving fast, almost too fast, especially for the elderly.
A: When my grandma kept asking me questions about her new iPhone and how to use its many features, I realized that many people who are older and didn't grow up around an abundance of technology have trouble using modern devices.
B: This information shows me that there is an opportunity for the youth to teach the older generations how to use their technology.
C: Elderly people would be the ideal customers.
D: This opportunity is very easy to take advantage of, as kids/teens are very eager to use technology and teach others how to use it, while people of older age are very eager to learn how to use their new devices. The intentions of the two parties complement each other.
E: Again, I saw this opportunity because my grandma needed approached me to help her use her new device. People who either do not have a close relationship with their grandparents or whose grandparents are tech-savvy may not see this opportunity like I do.
Regulatory
1: The dangers of texting while driving.
A: I realized this was such a huge issue when I was driving, and people were not responding to traffic signals, as their heads were down, glued to their phone. I instantly realized that an opportunity exists here.
B: It shows that currently texting while driving is still a huge issue in our society, putting many at risk. There must be something we can do to prevent this from happening.
C: All drivers would be the target customers.
D: This is a very hard opportunity to fix, as people are aware of the dangers of texting while driving, yet proceed to do it anyway. This happens for many reasons. First, our culture tries to complete as many tasks as possible as quickly as possible, resulting in multitasking, even when not safe. Also, we are glued to technology. Lastly, drivers believe if they text and drive once, and nothing happens, they can keep doing it. However, it only takes one time for an awful accident to occur.
E: I saw this opportunity because I drove very often at home. Someone who does not drive as much may not see this opportunity like I do.
2: The vaping dilemma, especially among teens.
A: Basically hanging out with friends in high school/college taught me about this opportunity.
B: Vaping is constantly around us, especially among high school/college students. It was meant to act as an intermediate step for cigarette smokers to try and stop smoking, but instead, people who wouldn't smoke normally started using vapes. This is dangerous for our society.
C: High school/college kids are the main people whom this opportunity exists for.
D: It would be hard to exploit, as vaping has become so popular, and people started to vape not only because they enjoy it, but also because it is now considered "cool".
E: Someone who doesn't go out as much may not realize the opportunity like I do. However, vaping nowadays is so commonplace among people who go out.
