Growing Your Social Capital

Aaliyah 1: She is my girlfriends friend who lives in the Standard. 2: She is a domain expert, and knows a lot about the way traffic lights are put up and operated. 3: My girlfriend introduced me to her. 4: She just gave me advice, no return expected. 5: Now I know a lot more about the traffic light system, and it may be a little harder to exploit this industry than I had previously anticipated. Jacob 1: He is an upperclassman in my fraternity that I actually hadn't talked to before this encounter. 2: He is a market expert, and has had many people answer surveys that he puts out through incentives. 3: He is in my fraternity. 4: He gave me advice on how to conduct successful surveys and in return I gave him a Chikfila sandwich. 5: I can now conduct more efficient surveys, as he has offered to help me. John 1: John is a construction worker in Gainesville. 2: He is a supplier, and knows a lot about construction projects in the area. 3: I saw him doing construction on the...

Idea Napkin No. 2

1: I am a student here at the University of Florida from Baltimore who is attempting to earn a Master's in Finance. I am a big fan of music, sports, spending time with friends, meeting new people, and most of all, success. Growing up, I was involved with student government, entrepreneurial cohorts, and teaching at my local Hebrew school on Sundays. I came from attending a small private school, which was a very different environment than what I am currently living in, so being able to succeed here, so unknown and far away from home, is a skill that I am proud of. I have always felt a need to best represent the groups I am involved with, which has led me to demand change. 2: I am offering a more efficient traffic light at the corner of West University Avenue and Southwest 13th Street. It will decrease traffic and the amount of accidents and risk for both cars and humans. The way it will do this is by being able to sense the amount of people waiting at a certain part of the light, and...

Elevator Pitch No. 2

Some feedback I received from my last pitch was that it was a bit too formal, so I decided to make this one a bit more casual. Also, I was told to use my hands more, so I did just that. These steps are important for a quality elevator pitch.

Create a Customer Avatar

The prototypical customer for my idea would be someone who definitely lives at The Standard in Gainesville. This person often shop for groceries at Publix or Target, which requires he or she to encounter the poorly managed traffic light at the intersection of West University Avenue and Southwest 13th Street. Also, the customer enjoys Italian food, and eats at Piesano's regularly. Additionally, he or she owns a car that they use to travel on occasion, and is a business student, thus requiring them to cross the street to get to the Heavener School of Business. Lastly, this person becomes impatient very easily, and has a very busy schedule, which makes him or her angry when required to wait for an unnecessarily extended period of time at an intersection. Like my avatar, I often get groceries from Publix or Target, and am a business student who needs to go to Heavener on occasion. I am a busy student, and hate when time is wasted. I enjoy Italian food and often dine at Piesano's. ...

What's Your Secret Sauce

These are five ways I believe I am unique. 1: Positive. I do my best to try and think of the bright side, and stay positive in times of adversity. 2: Humorous. In any situation, adding a little touch of humor makes the experience more enjoyable, and I tend to provide that. 3: Curious. I tend to strive for knowledge, and I am never afraid to ask questions. If I am required to do a task, of course there is something special about just diving right into it, but I want to know first how I can best accomplish this goal, and will ask questions. 4: Friendly. Many may argue that this trait is not so unique, but everyday I find more and more people that are just unnecessarily rude. I get it, people have their bad days, and that is ok, but going around being kind really makes interactions so much more special, and can really change someone else's day who is going through some rough events. 5: Determined. If I start a task, I am going to finish it. Leaving a task unfinished is so unsatis...

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2

My first interviewee was a friend of mine named Dylan, who often visits his girlfriend at The Standard, and thus, frequently encounters the traffic light at the intersection of University Avenue and Southwest 13th Street. He judges street lights based off of their convenience, or basically how fast he can cross. If he often has to wait a long period of time, like he does at this specific light, then he believes there is room for improvement. Next, I interviewed my friend Aaliyah, who enjoys running, and usually encounters this intersection on her journey. She looks for the same things as Dylan when deciding if a stoplight is up to her standards or not, and she has been frustrated that this traffic light is on her path. She has considered switching her route for running, but she currently uses this route that passes through the intersection. Lastly, my friend Aaron, who works at the Piesanos in that area, always complains to me about this traffic light. However, it is on his way to ...
